Completing the PADI IDC in the Andaman Islands – A Journey Back in Time

As the ferry approached Havelock Island, the first sight that captured the eye was the towering rainforest trees rising straight from the turquoise ocean. It felt almost surreal, as though we had drifted into a prehistoric wilderness — a place that could only be compared to stepping into Jurassic Park. The dense, green canopy swayed above shimmering coves, setting the tone for what would become a life-changing experience in diving education.

The IDC began with a heartfelt welcome from the team at Scuba Lov. Sada, the local Havelock instructor trainer, embodied the warmth and hospitality the island is known for. From the moment we arrived, he ensured every detail was taken care of — from arranging comfortable accommodation and reliable transport to making sure each candidate had everything needed to settle in. That local touch made the transition easy and helped us immediately focus on what we were there for: becoming PADI instructors.

Working with Platinum Course Director Mark Soworka was a privilege that shaped the entire experience. His decades of expertise were evident from the first classroom session. Mark’s teaching style struck the perfect balance between professional and relaxed, making even the most complex aspects of dive theory engaging and easy to absorb. His calm confidence and real-world insights transformed the formal training into an inspiring process that motivated us all to be better divers, educators, and ambassadors for the ocean.

Havelock itself proved to be the perfect IDC destination. The island’s serenity and natural beauty created the ideal backdrop for intense learning balanced with personal reflection. The new facilities at Scuba Lov were impressive — well-equipped for both academic and in-water sessions. Just next door, the famous Full Moon Café offered the perfect post-dive relaxation spot, serving excellent food with a view that could make anyone linger a little longer.

The diving, of course, was nothing short of spectacular. Exploring sites once praised by Jacques Cousteau as among the finest in the world added an extra layer of wonder to the IDC. The clarity of the water, the diversity of marine life, and the untouched beauty of these reefs created a training environment that went far beyond just developing skills — it reignited a sense of connection to the ocean itself.

What made this experience stand out even more was the continued support after the course ended. Both Mark and Sada maintain strong contact with their graduates, providing advice, mentorship, and opportunities through the global Dive-Careers network. This sense of community means that completing the IDC wasn’t just a certification milestone; it was entry into a lifelong professional network spanning the world’s oceans.

After the IDC, exploring more of the Andamans deepened the sense of adventure. Traveling north through the remote tribal lands of the Jarawa and visiting Karen villages revealed a part of India frozen in time — an extraordinary mix of nature, culture, and history. The journey combined with the IDC training created an experience that was not only about diving but about rediscovering simplicity, purpose, and connection.
