Zero to Hero with the chilled vibe of Nusa Lembongan, Bali

Right from the moment I walked up to Scuba Center Asia, I knew I’d stumbled onto something special. The shop’s tucked away on Mushroom Beach, just a few sandy steps from the water, and the whole place just hums with chill, good vibes. Owners Bas and Kim are absolute legends—they both radiate this laid-back energy that makes everyone feel like an old friend and a future dive pro all at once. Kim, with her infectious laugh and next-level customer care, keeps the whole show running, while Bas is always nearby with a big grin and a fresh joke.

The rest of the instructor and divemaster team totally followed their lead—everyone is supportive, always up for a laugh, and more than happy to share their own diving tips, island secrets, or just a cold Bintang after a day in the water.

From day one of my Open Water, I was impressed by how thorough and personal the training was. The team really went the extra mile, whether we were drilling skills in the pool or getting the rundown on dive theory over coffee at the shop’s beachside lounge. Moving up through Advanced, Rescue, and finally Divemaster, I could literally feel my confidence growing—each new certification felt like I was being given a new superpower.

And let’s talk about the diving: Nusa Lembongan seriously delivers the goods! On my first few dives at Manta Point, I was blown away by squadrons of manta rays drifting by, and when crystal-clear days came, we got lucky at Crystal Bay and spotted those alien-looking Mola Molas drifting in from the deep. Drifts, reefs, big stuff, macro—the dive sites here have it all, and every instructor and DM seemed to know the secret spots for the best marine life encounters.

Of course, being a Divemaster candidate here is so much more than training. I still laugh about late-night beach bar sessions with my fellow candidates, impromptu surf trips on our days off, and communal Nasi Campur dinners on the sand, watching the sun set over Bali’s silhouette. There’s a proper tribe vibe among the candidates and the whole crew—by the end, we were basically family. Diving together, learning together, and celebrating each milestone made each day on Lembongan something to remember.

Looking back, I’m amazed at not only how much I learned, but at the confidence I now feel kitted up and ready to backroll into pretty much any ocean on earth. Bas, Kim, and the team at Scuba Center Asia didn’t just teach me to dive—they handed me a ticket to the world, and a community to share it with.
