KOH TAO, THAILAND IS THE PLACE FOR YOUR PADI DIVING INTERNSHIP
KOH TAO IS WIDELY RECOGNIZED AS ONE OF THE TOP DIVER EDUCATION CENTRES IN THE WORLD! Today, Koh Tao is one of Thailand’s major dive destinations. While remaining an absolute paradise, Koh Tao has expanded to cater for all types of tastes and budgets. Although scuba diving remains the primary focus of most local businesses you will find Koh Tao offers far more than just diving, a whole range of activities to keep even the most avid non-diver enjoying soaking up the atmosphere of Koh Tao.
It is your dream of a beautiful tropical setting focused on diving. Unlike competing dive internship destinations, Koh Tao is a vibrant and successful dive destination with ample opportunity to build the experience that will make you a great dive professional. This gives you genuine employment opportunities and the chance of a fantastic lifestyle.
A small island, a little more than 21 square km, located about 70km east of the coastline between Suratthani and Chumpon in the Gulf of Thailand.Initially, there was only the occasional fisherman from neighbouring islands seeking shelter from a storm. On June 18, 1899, His Majesty the King Chulalongkorn visited Koh Tao marking a huge boulder at Jor Por Ror Bay. This site is revered and respected, and marks the island as having been claimed under royal patronage. From 1933 until being abandoned in 1947 the island was used as a political prison. Later, the first pioneers began to arrive from neighbouring Koh Phangan, and began a very simple, tough life, harvesting coconuts, fishing and growing vegetables.
Koh Tao Thailand completes more than half of all the dive certifications in Thailand. This really does make a great destination to begin your career as a dive professional with your Koh Tao diving internship
The first travellers began to arrive in the early eighties and the island quickly became widely known as a paradise. Faster and larger boats began servicing the island and the islands reputation for natural beauty, marine life and coral reefs grew. Koh Tao is one of the must do stops on the South East Asia route. The clear, tranquil waters offer an ideal location for learning to dive. You’ll also find that, although Koh Tao and Dive Careers are focused on diving, there are many other interests from rock climbing to water-skiing to make your Koh Tao experience unforgettable.
Koh Tao, once a quiet island in the Gulf of Thailand, rapidly transformed during the 1990s into a world-class diving destination, attracting enthusiasts from around the globe. Its crystal-clear waters, abundant marine life, and diverse dive sites—from shallow reefs to advanced pinnacles—made it ideal for divers of all skill levels. As the island’s reputation grew, so did its infrastructure, with numerous dive schools and resorts emerging to meet demand.
A key element in Koh Tao’s rise to prominence has been its status as a mecca for diving education. The island now certifies thousands of new divers annually, making it one of the top places in Asia-Pacific for dive certifications. Beyond entry-level courses, Koh Tao became a global hub for professional dive training, offering advanced and instructor-level programs.
Notably, industry leaders like Mark Soworka have played a significant role in establishing a culture of excellence in instructor development on the island. Mark’s renowned expertise ensures aspiring dive professionals receive thorough, safety-focused, and career-oriented training—a key reason why Koh Tao remains at the forefront of dive pro development today.

Sidemount & Tech Sidemount Diving on Koh Tao: FAQs
Sidemount diving means carrying tanks mounted along the sides of the diver rather than on the back. It’s suitable for recreational, technical, and overhead diving. To enroll in a PADI Sidemount Diver course, you must be Open Water certified, at least 15 years old, and medically fit–recent diving experience is recommended.
Over 2–2.5 days, you’ll cover knowledge development (manual and reviews), shallow/confined water skill sessions, and 3–4 open water sidemount training dives. You’ll practice gas management, streamlining, body posture, buoyancy, regulator use, and problem-solving skills like emergency shut-downs and air sharing.
Sidemount offers more flexibility, better trim and buoyancy control, easier gear transport, less strain on your back, and increased gas supply. It’s popular for extending bottom time and prepping for cave or technical diving.
Courses provide sidemount harnesses, dual regulators, two independent cylinders, a dive computer, and all required accessories. Students learn gear setup and configuration for safety and comfort during dives.
Tech Sidemount is designed for technical divers, teaching decompression procedures and handling multiple (up to 6) tanks. Prerequisites include Open Water certification and 20+ logged dives. The program covers advanced topics like deco bottle management, gas switches, propulsion techniques, handling emergencies, and deep or overhead environments.
Yes, after foundational sidemount training and gaining experience, divers may take PADI Tec Sidemount or similar courses to expand into technical diving specialties.
Courses are flexible, run by experienced instructors, and typically cost from 20,000–35,000 THB, including equipment and certification fees.

A Journey Beneath the Surface
In early 2024, I returned to Koh Tao and launched Freedive with Thomas—a project born from my belief that freediving is much more than a sport. It’s a powerful tool for personal growth, fostering physical presence, mental and physical awareness, impulse control, and a positive connection with oneself. These are skills that ripple out into everyday life, helping us become better caretakers of ourselves and those around us.
Freediving has been my path to slowing down, listening deeply, and reconnecting with breath and body. My teaching is rooted in compassion, patience, and safety. I believe freediving should be accessible to anyone willing to explore their own limits with kindness and curiosity, no matter their experience level.
My Philosophy
At the heart of my approach is mindfulness: cultivating calm, awareness, and trust—both in yourself and the ocean. I emphasize:
- Breath as a Bridge: The breath connects mind and body; learning to listen and guide it unlocks freedom underwater.
- Safety & Respect: Every dive is a conversation with your limits, practiced with care and presence.
- Personalized Guidance: Your journey is unique. I tailor coaching to your needs, helping you grow with confidence.
- Joy in Exploration: Freediving is as much about play and wonder as it is technique.
I became a freediving instructor in 2012, bringing years of dedicated practice and teaching experience to every session. My approach centers on calm, steady guidance to help you find ease and flow—whether it’s your first breath-hold or your hundredth dive. Beyond techniques, I offer a supportive space to discover how freediving can enrich your life—building resilience, focus, and a profound connection to nature.
A Word to the Wise:
“You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink.”
I’m here to support and guide you every step of the way, but the choice to grow, explore, and deepen your connection is yours alone to make. Freediving is a personal journey—one that unfolds best with patience, openness, and self-compassion.
