What is CCR (Closed Circuit Rebreather) diving?

CCR diving uses a rebreather unit that recycles the diver’s exhaled gas, removing carbon dioxide and replenishing oxygen, allowing for nearly complete usage of breathing gas. Unlike open-circuit scuba where exhaled bubbles are lost to the water, CCRs offer silent operation, optimal gas mixtures at any depth, and minimal bubble emission, which is crucial for research, photography, and approaching marine life.

What is included in a CCR course?

A comprehensive CCR course includes:

  • Practice dives (typically at least 8): Focused on real-world skill development and troubleshooting in open water

  • Experience progression: Preparing divers for continued training in deeper or more challenging technical environments

Prerequisites:

The prerequisites for entry-level PADI CCR (Closed Circuit Rebreather) training, such as the Tec 40 CCR Diver course, are as follows:

  1. PADI Advanced Open Water Diver (or equivalent from another recognized agency)
  2. PADI Enriched Air Diver (Nitrox) certification
  3. PADI Deep Diver certification OR proof of at least 10 dives to 30 meters/100 feet
  4. Minimum of 30 logged dives (prior to the start of the course), with additional dives logged before the final qualification
  5. PADI Rescue Diver certification required before completion of Tec 40 CCR
  6. Minimum age: 18 years old
  7. Medical clearance: A diver medical form signed by a physician within the last 12 months
