Technical Diving pushes the usual limits of recreational diving, and helps divers improve their knowledge and skills further.
Not only will you be able to access dive sites very few divers have seen, but it will also completely change the way your regard your usual recreational dives, making you a safer and more competent diver.
Beyond the usual recreational limits
Depth : deeper than 40 m
Time : beyond the No Decompression Limit
Penetration : > 40 m total linear penetration (overhead)
Gas : > 40% Nitrox and/or use of Trimix (helium)
Gear : 2 or more tanks, sidemount, long hose, etc.
As a PADI Professional, being a Technical diver will open a whole new world of opportunities in the diving industry, allowing you to guide and/or teach technical divers, as well as offer more knowledge and experience to your recreational students.
Dive-Careers' technical diving team will come to your Dive Centre to teach the entire range of PADI TecRec courses to you and your students, and can add Technical Diving modules to the IDC we organize at your Dive Centre. We will help you set up technical diving courses at your location, offering expertise and advice regarding gear, logistics and teaching related to Technical diving. If you are a freelance diving instructor, we can help you become a Technical Diving Instructor - if you are a PADI Dive Centre, we can help you become a TecRec Dive Centre.
We can come and teach Technical Diving courses up to Instructor level anywhere in the world - but we also have a few permanent course locations where you can join our regular programs.

Typically, you should hold an advanced recreational or entry-level technical diver certification, have logged at least 50–100 dives, and be comfortable with basic scuba skills. Prior knowledge of nitrox or decompression procedures is highly recommended.
Tim Lawrence and DJL Tech Diving train divers using AP Diving’s Inspiration/Evolution CCR units, recognised for reliability and global support. Training on other popular models may be arranged on request.
CCR training is primarily conducted on Koh Tao for open water and technical wreck environments, and on the Thai mainland (e.g. Song Hong, Khao Sok) for advanced cave and trimix courses.
Courses start at MOD 2 (entry-level) through MOD 5 (hypoxic trimix), covering air diluent, air deco, normoxic trimix, and hypoxic trimix. Many courses can be combined with advanced wreck, cave, or diving expedition certification.
Standard packages include academic/theory modules, unit setup and maintenance, 14+ practical dives, use of blending facilities for Nitrox and Trimix, and expedition or intern options to build unit hours at reduced rates.
Yes, we offer CCR add-ons for divemaster and instructor candidates or technical diving interns, allowing seamless integration and fast progression into CCR expedition teams.
Safety is paramount and covers advanced drills for unit failure, gas management, bailout planning, zero visibility scenarios, deep decompression stops, team protocols, and equipment maintenance. Tim Lawrence’s team provides continuous support during and after certification.
Tim is a renowned technical diving instructor trainer, BSAC First Class and PADI/ANDI-certified at the highest level. He offers mentorship, access to advanced expeditions, and strong international connections in technical diving circles.

Sidemount diving means carrying tanks mounted along the sides of the diver rather than on the back. It’s suitable for recreational, technical, and overhead diving. To enroll in a PADI Sidemount Diver course, you must be Open Water certified, at least 15 years old, and medically fit–recent diving experience is recommended.
Over 2–2.5 days, you’ll cover knowledge development (manual and reviews), shallow/confined water skill sessions, and 3–4 open water sidemount training dives. You’ll practice gas management, streamlining, body posture, buoyancy, regulator use, and problem-solving skills like emergency shut-downs and air sharing.
Sidemount offers more flexibility, better trim and buoyancy control, easier gear transport, less strain on your back, and increased gas supply. It’s popular for extending bottom time and prepping for cave or technical diving.
Courses provide sidemount harnesses, dual regulators, two independent cylinders, a dive computer, and all required accessories. Students learn gear setup and configuration for safety and comfort during dives.
Tech Sidemount is designed for technical divers, teaching decompression procedures and handling multiple (up to 6) tanks. Prerequisites include Open Water certification and 20+ logged dives. The program covers advanced topics like deco bottle management, gas switches, propulsion techniques, handling emergencies, and deep or overhead environments.
Yes, after foundational sidemount training and gaining experience, divers may take PADI Tec Sidemount or similar courses to expand into technical diving specialties.
Courses are flexible, run by experienced instructors, and typically cost from 20,000–35,000 THB, including equipment and certification fees.

Sidemount diving is a configuration where diver(s) wear their tanks at their sides rather than on their back. Originally developed for cave explorers needing greater flexibility and access in tight spaces, sidemount has become popular for both recreational and technical divers. The approach emphasizes streamlining, comfort, and simplicity while providing redundancy and easier control of multiple tanks.
- Increased comfort and flexibility: Tanks are easier to don and remove in the water.
- Improved trim and buoyancy: Streamlined profile enhances control and reduces drag.
- Redundancy: Independent gas supply from separate tanks increases safety for both recreational and technical dives.
- Accessibility: Better access to valves and regulators, especially important for troubleshooting or emergency procedures.
- Reduced back strain: No need to carry heavy tanks on the back when entering/exiting the water.
Combining sidemount with Tec 40 introduces the diver to technical procedures with the additional benefits of sidemount configuration. Sidemount’s redundancy, gas management, and flexibility complement the decompression diving, advanced planning, and equipment handling skills developed in Tec 40:
- Enhances safety and gas management for staged decompression dives.
- Prepares divers for future cave, wreck, and deep exploration.
- Builds confidence and foundational skills that are directly transferable to advanced technical or overhead environment diving.
Sidemount with Donarun Das is the ideal springboard for divers aspiring to excel in both recreational and technical environments, delivering real-world skills and inspiration for further technical adventure.

Donarun Das stands out for his leadership in technical diving across Asia, recognized as India’s deepest civilian diver and an international instructor for CCR (Closed Circuit Rebreather), mixed gas, and cave diving. His teaching combines technical mastery with practical exploration, offering personalized coaching and safety-driven skills built around mastery, not just certification. Learners benefit from his vast experience in deep, overhead, and decompression environments and gain insights from an instructor who is an innovator in both dive technology and exploration.
CCR diving uses a rebreather unit that recycles the diver’s exhaled gas, removing carbon dioxide and replenishing oxygen, allowing for nearly complete usage of breathing gas. Unlike open-circuit scuba where exhaled bubbles are lost to the water, CCRs offer silent operation, optimal gas mixtures at any depth, and minimal bubble emission, which is crucial for research, photography, and approaching marine life.
- Extended dive times and gas efficiency: Nearly all inhaled gas is reused so dives become much longer, even at depth.
- Decreased decompression obligations: Divers can optimize inert gas exposure, reducing or even eliminating decompression in some profiles.
- Minimal bubbles: This lowers disturbance to marine life and improves stealth for scientific, photography, and cave diving applications.
- Warm, moist breathing gas: Improved comfort, especially on long or cold dives.
- Significant cost savings on helium and specialty gases: More economical for repeated and deep technical dives.
A comprehensive CCR course includes:
- Unit setup, operation, and maintenance
- Buoyancy control and loop volume management
- Gas and scrubber management
- Emergency procedures for component failures and gas problems
- Practice dives (typically at least 8) focused on real-world skill development and troubleshooting in open water
- Theory sessions: Dive planning, decompression, and equipment configuration
- Experience progression: Preparing divers for continued training in deeper or more challenging technical environments
Donarun Das offers CCR courses and try dives across India, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives, tailored to diver needs from beginner through advanced technical and cave rebreather training.## FAQs for CCR Training.
