MARINE CONSERVATION PROJECTS THAILAND

KOH TAO C.O.R.A.L (Conservation Of Reefs & Aquatic Life)

Our Divemaster and Instructor programmes on Koh Tao include marine resource management seminars and coral and fish identificaiton workshops. On Koh Tao we also offer our candidates the chance to participate in coral reef regeneration, with programmes beginning for seahorse breeding and reintroduction.

This one-day course is available to anyone who has completed a PADI certified open water course, and for those who wish to make a difference. We at C.O.R.A.L concentrate on the value of keeping our natural resources abundant, with minimal impact on aquatic life and natural habitats.

The C.O.R.A.L experience involves a morning where you learn to understand captive propagation of corals, under controlled conditions, and a hands-on ‘fragging workshop’ to prepare new specimens. The afternoon consists of two dives where captive specimens are re-introduced back into the reef, and new coral colonies are collected for analysis upon return. We aim to record data from all dive sites in Koh Tao to get a better understanding of why certain species appear, and what preventative measures can be taken to help save our reefs. Our future objectives are to re-introduce lesser-seen species to Koh Tao, such as sea horses, rays, shrimps, and even sharks…do you want to learn more and be part of the solution?

We also encourage you to take that knowldege further with envrionmental internships that Dive Careers conducts in conjunction with CORE Sea on neighbouring Koh Phangan. These internships are the only diving internships with a credible scientific base conducted in the Gulf of Thailand.

Koh Phangan Reef Ecology Research Diver

Dive Careers Koh Tao offers Marine Ecology Research courses in conjunction with CORE Sea, Koh Phangan. This is a great chance to get your dive education off to a great start on Koh Tao and get a great understanding of the marine environment with the Research Diver courses conducted by CORE. We have great packages combining COREs environmental training with Dive Careers Divemaster and Dive Instructor internships.

We aim to encourage and promote a strong environmental awareness and understanding with our dive professioanl programmes.

Core Research Diver - 10 Days / 10 Dives

In-depth training on current marine research and sampling techniques for scientists, students of marine biology/ zoology/ ecology, bio-geo-chemistry and oceanography or people interested in going beyond recreational diving and assisting in scientific field-work.

College Credit: Course is designed in compliance with the European ECTS system as part of “General Studies” and is usually credited with 3 CP

COURSE CONTENT

• Planning, preparation and execution of research/ sampling campaigns
• Advanced gas planning and safety protocols
• Advanced mapping and imaging of marine structures (transects, grids, chain-profile and adv. Patterns)
• Specialized buoyancy techniques; equipment handling and lifting devices
• Technical Diving Intro
• Sampling techniques for water, sediments, planktonic and nektonic organisms
• Laboratory internship
• Intro to analysis and documentation of field samples
• Participation in current research projects
• Lectures on: reef classification, coral and aquatic animal physiology, ecology and all methods used in the course

By the end of this course participants will be able to design sampling campaigns independently and execute them safely.
